Classification of Boilers

Boilers are Classified in various ways.

  1. Relative to the Gases – These consists of Fire tube boilers and Water tube boilers.
  2. Pressure of steam – When a boiler produces steam at more than 80 bar, then the boiler is known as high pressure boiler. And when a boiler produces steam below 80 bar then that is known as low pressure boiler.
  3. Internally fired or externally Fired – When the combustion region is placed inside the boiler then that is internally fired and when the combustion region is either under the boiler or outside it then it is known as externally fired.
  4. Design of Gas Passage.
  5. Nature of fluids.
  6. Method of Circulation.
  7. Nature of service to be performed – Stationary and portable boilers
  8. Position and number of drums.
  9. Heat Source
  10. Nature of draught.
